My research is at the forefront of scholarly inquiry into the historical and social role of the Chinese communities in New Zealand, including inter-racial relationships and the emergence of hybrid identity, and particularly the tension between nationalism and transnationalism. The significance of this research and its contribution to opening a new academic discourse has been recognised both nationally and internationally.
